With our MVI close to leaving school and starting the next stage of their lives, from higher education to studying abroad, we have been hosting various events to support and guide our Senior and Sixth Form pupils as they begin to consider their next steps.

Last Wednesday we hosted our annual Careers & HE Convention in New Hall for Years 9-13, and parents.

This year we had a wide variety of HE and apprenticeship providers represented, with institutions from all over the country including:

University of Birmingham
Imperial College, University of London
Queen Mary, University of London
City, University of London
London South Bank University

For the first time, we also welcomed a number of specialist institutions:

SP Jain London School of Management
The London Interdisciplinary School
BIMM University
Istituto Marangoni London

The Royal Society of Chemistry talked about careers and further study in all fields chemistry-related. Whilst areas such as pharmacy, dentistry, and beauty and aesthetics public relations were also represented.

With the growing interest in apprenticeships we were delighted to welcome along Jack from AIM Apprenticeships, who talked to students about the various levels of apprenticeships from Level 2 up to Degree Apprenticeship programmes.

We had a number of local and national businesses attend. Marsh Insurance Brokers got students thinking about how valuable items such as jewellery and fine art were insured. Whilst Janathan from EY shared his insights about banking and capital markets. Those interested in a career in architecture and design were able to speak to Tooley & Foster Architects, one of the oldest architectural practices in the UK.

There were also a number of career areas covered, including:

Mechanical Engineering, PhD research, Human Resources and law, with three representative from Red Lion Chambers in attendance.

The following day we welcomed a host of international universities and colleges to speak to our Sixth Form students. The event was organised in conjunction with The University Guys, who are experts in supporting students explore, prepare for and apply to universities all over the world.

Students were able to speak to representatives from a wide range of colleges and universities about course choice, the admissions process and life in another country. Institutions in attendance ranged from Loyola Marymount University in California to the Swiss Education Group.

This event was especially useful to our Year 12 students in helping them consider overseas study options alongside their UCAS and Degree Apprenticeship applications.

We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all those who gave their time to talk to the students and gave personal insights and advice. We would also like to say a big thank you to the students and parents for taking the time to talk to the volunteers, ask great questions and making our guests feel so welcome at our Careers and HE Convention. We hope you all got a lot out of it.

If you want any more information on any of the talks, or on future events, please contact Miss Darkin at rdarkin@chigwell-school.org.
