Sebastian has made an impression

Sebastian, one of our sixth-form pupils, has recently participated in the London Regional Final of the ARTiculation Prize 2023. The event took place on Thursday afternoon, 12 January at Whitechapel Gallery. The prestigious, ARTiculation event, is the National Gallery’s nationwide public speaking initiative for young people aged between 16 and 19, designed to promote the appreciation and discussion of visual culture. Sebastian prepared a 10-minute presentation on the Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke, by artist Richard Dadd, 1855-64. He spoke confidently in front of a packed auditorium and the adjudicator, artist Rachel Jones, praised him for his brilliant talk and congratulated Sebastian for engaging with the audience so brilliantly and for his skilful presentation and use of animation. She praised him for his excellent introduction and for his historical investigation into mental health.

This was an excellent achievement for Sebastian and an annual event Chigwell School takes part in.

Ms Sharon Wales, Arts Teacher, and Sebastian’s mentor commented: ‘Every student member who takes part joins the alumni of past speakers who have taken part in the competition which provides many opportunities. This includes taking part in art documentaries and speaking at art events. Some of the work is even paid. As Sebastian’s mentor for the program, I have been impressed with his progress and willingness to research and improve his presentation skills something he had not achieved on this scale before. I am sure he will use this as a springboard to present other fascinating talks in the future. Sebastian has proven himself to be a good role model for the school and he was a great ambassador for the school on the day. Well done, Sebastian!’
