Our new Senior Deputy Head of Prep School

Gareth Thomas grew up in North West London and attended Aldenham School as a boarder and sports scholar before being elected as Head Boy. After teaching primary and secondary children in Kenya, he studied Sport Science at University of Leeds before continuing there to complete his PGCE where he was awarded a Dean’s prize for academic achievement.

Having had experience working in the state sector, Gareth joined Haberdashers Boys’ Prep School where he was Phase Leader of Years 3 and 4 and amongst other things, led on the computing strategy. In 2019 he was promoted to Prep Deputy Head Pastoral and, as DSL, oversaw the introduction of a strong values-based curriculum and bespoke character education scheme for nearly 400 pupils. Gareth was also Acting Head of the Prep School for over 6 months during a successful tenure in 2022 and has recently completed an MA in Educational Leadership from the University of Exeter. He is a Governor of a Primary school in South London.

Gareth’s passions are facilitating a happy and all-round education for pupils with inclusivity, high standards, and individualised care at its core. He specialises in pupil well-being and curriculum development and is keen to foster an environment in which all pupils are challenged every day.

"I am looking forward to getting to know all of the pupils and to ensure each of them continues to be given the support they need to fulfil their individual ambitions," said Mr Thomas.
