Netball at Chigwell
Girls’ netball is played throughout the Lent term at Chigwell School and is played across both the Michaelmas and Lent term by pupils in the U8 to U11 age groups. We are very proud to give all pupils the opportunity to participate and develop their netball skills across all year groups. This begins at the grass roots level with teams participating for the school in regular fixtures from U10 to U13 level, similarly in the Senior School from U14 to the 1st team squad.
We have great pride in what our pupils have achieved in the sport and our philosophy has enabled the players to develop skills from a young age, to be independent thinkers on the court and to also be versatile performers by playing in a number of positions. The school is very fortunate to have fantastic courts and this allows us to host a range of fixtures at one time. In addition, we are fortunate to be able to host an U11 festival involving many of the local schools at the beginning of the academic year, and in the Lent term, a senior competition for the 1st and 2nd team, as well as the U13 age group. We have continued to thoroughly enjoy running festivals for the U9 and U12 squads, which have been extremely successful, giving a large number of pupils the opportunity to play. Many of our teams play both independent and state schools, entering the local Redbridge league, IAPS tournaments, the Schools National competition and the Independent Netball Schools Cup (ISNC).
In recent years the junior teams have been very successful in the IAP’s competition, with the U12’s qualifying for the national finals and the U13 and U15 squads reaching the final rounds of the ISNC competition.
Chigwell School has developed close connections with local clubs such as Essex Open and Leyton NC and a number of pupils attend training sessions and represent the clubs each week. We also have a number of pupils representing the Essex County Academy squad, leading to the Regional squad as part of the England Excel programme. Following on from this, pupils have been selected to attend national screening England trials.
In October 2016 an U14 and U16 squad attended the Orlando Disney Netball Competition which involved clubs from all over the world. Both of the Chigwell teams had an unforgettable experience on the tour, training with international coaches, learning new skills, but most importantly they developed confidence in their ability and made strong connections with the opposition, many of whom they are in regular contact with and planning to visit and tour with in the future. Given that Chigwell were the only school representatives, they were outstanding and finished third in their respective age groups. A wonderful achievement and a special week for all involved. As a netball department we are continuing to encourage our pupils to enjoy their sport and take on all challenges. We continue to look to attend future tours and competitions, in order to give the pupils the maximum opportunities possible.
