Last week, our Year 6 pupils had a very special visit to the Houses of Parliament where they were shown around and had the chance to ask our local MP, Neil Hudson, some questions about his job. Keep reading to hear from Kira and Deyan on what they got up to.

On Thursday the 6th of February, I was fortunate enough to visit one of London's most historical and prestigious buildings: the Houses of Parliament. As we approached the entrance, my jaw dropped at the sight of towering turrets and the rushing river running below.

Once we were ready to learn, the students and I began the tour by visiting the Palace of Westminster- which was a breathtaking establishment- where we learnt the background of the Palace.

Next, we had a visit to the House of Commons, where the colour theme was lime green. We had the chance to watch a live debate which gave me the opportunity to watch a real issue being debated. The Members of Parliament had energy and passion, making it all seem so important.

After, we visited the House of Lords, where the colour theme was a royal red. This seemed more serious, with a picturesque, grand throne for the reigning monarch, with many intricate designs. The artwork was ornate, and every Lord and Baroness was dressed smartly. To add to the excitement, we met our local Member of Parliament, (Neil Hudson) and asked him some questions. This was a memorable experience, and I thought that I could do something in Parliament one day.

This school trip was fantastic, deepening our appreciation for democracy, and encouraging us to take an interest in politics. This is a must-visit for anyone, and I highly recommend it.

On Thursday the 6th of January, the Year 6’s of Chigwell school went to the Houses of Parliament, and I particularly enjoyed our time in the Houses of Commons. The green seats and historic surroundings made me feel almost as important as Keir Starmer (leader of the Labour party). I learnt that MPs debate laws here, and the process involves careful rules and respectful arguments. It was fascinating to hear about how debates are structured and how MPs represent their voters’ views. We also got to observe a live debate from the public view gallery, which made me feel connected to the real workings of parliament. Overall, the visit expanded my knowledge of democracy, and the massive role parliament plays in improving the country.

Mrs James said 'The children from Chigwell School thoroughly enjoyed meeting Neil Hudson and expressing their views on changes that they would like in their local area. Neil was very receptive to their ideas and engaged positively with the children. The teachers felt that everyone gained a lot from the experience.'
