Pupils from the Politics Department recently attended the LSE YouthMUN conference at the London School of Economics and Political Science, joining young delegates from across the country for a stimulating and intellectually demanding event.

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations, in which high school students take on the roles of diplomats representing different countries. Participants debate global issues, negotiate resolutions, and develop key skills in public speaking, critical thinking, and collaboration.

At LSE YouthMUN, Chigwell pupils immersed themselves in a wide range of complex and thought-provoking topics. Committees explored simulated historical crises such as the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Berlin Blockade, while others tackled contemporary global challenges including disarmament and post-Cold War weapons proliferation, the regulation of multinational corporations in global trade, and the growing privatisation of warfare.

They also took part in a dynamic House of Commons simulation focusing on English devolution and community empowerment, as well as specialised committees addressing the role of INTERPOL in combating the digital facilitation of terrorism. Another committee examined coercive lending practices in global finance, including the controversial issue of debt-trap diplomacy.

Throughout the conference, Chigwell delegates demonstrated confidence and intellectual curiosity, engaging thoughtfully with complex global issues while representing their assigned countries with professionalism.
