Mr King will be the 36th Headmaster in the School’s history of nearly four centuries. He is currently Deputy Head Academic at Dulwich College, prior to which he was Head of Science at Brighton College and a teacher of physics at Eton College. Mr King has an MA in Physics from Mansfield College, Oxford and he attended Colchester Royal Grammar School as a pupil himself, the same as Chigwell’s Founder. He will lead the School from the start of September 2022 and we also look forward to welcoming Mr King’s wife, Carrie, and their three children.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr King said: “It is a huge honour and privilege to be appointed as the next Headmaster of Chigwell School and I am very much looking forward to becoming part of this very special community. The vision and values are closely aligned with my own and I am excited by the ambitious plans to develop the School further. Already, the family and I have been made to feel extremely welcome and we are all looking forward to playing our part as members of the Chigwell family.”
Chair of Governors, Ms Roseanne Serrelli added, “I must thank all the Governors for their dedicated hard work throughout the appointment process. We were determined to find the right individual to lead the School through the next phase of its development, to be true to our core values but to enhance our high standards still further. Unsurprisingly, there was a large and strong field of highly qualified applicants but after a very rigorous process, the Board was unanimous that Mr King was the best candidate for the role.
Mr King is a highly respected academic lead with a track record of augmenting already excellent academic rigour in order that pupils are stretched to achieve the very best that they can. Young people who are happy and secure also flourish in school and beyond. Governors place kindness at the very heart of our community and Mr King shares that philosophy, demonstrating it throughout the selection process.
Mr King also emphasised the importance of co-curricular activity. Busy students who participate in music, art, drama and sport as well as an array of other activities are learning leadership and teamwork skills as well as purposeful leisure time.
To that end we are delighted to say that we have “broken the ground” of the new sports, swimming and wellness centre. We look forward to seeing children, families and the wider community enjoy that facility from Autumn 2023. This represents the first stage of our ambitious masterplan leading to our 400th anniversary. It is exciting to think that our current Year 7 children will be the 6th formers leading the celebrations in 2029.
Governors would also like to thank Mr Punt for working with them during the recruitment process and for all he has done for Chigwell over his tenure. "We are delighted that he and Mr King will work closely over the coming months to ensure the transition is seamless.”
