Year 5 pupil Jumera recently had the unique opportunity to visit Moorfields Eye Hospital Abu Dhabi where she met with Dr. Syed M. Asad Ali (Consultant Ophthalmologist in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus and Cataract Surgery) and Dr. Irfan Khan (Consultant Ophthalmologist in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus) to learn about the eye treatments available, the types of eye diseases managed and the impact of myopia on young children.
During her visit, she toured the state-of-the-art facilities, including a vibrant paediatric area designed for young children, featuring bright colours, engaging wall art and a child-friendly atmosphere to create a comforting environment.
Jumera Haque, who has had myopia since the age of five and is a member of the charity Eye-YPAG, described the visit as an insightful experience: "Eye-YPAG allows me to learn more about eye problems and take part in something that benefits both me and other young people. This visit expanded my knowledge, enabling me to contribute ideas to future research."
Eye-YPAG is a young persons’ advisory group for eye and vision research, founded in March 2019 with support from Moorfields Eye Charity, the NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre and Santen. The group meets in London at or near Moorfields Eye Hospital to learn about research, collaborate with researchers on eye conditions and treatments, ensure research information is accessible to young people and share ideas on future studies.
