11+ and 13+ Sports Scholarships

Candidates for a sports scholarship at 11+ and 13+ entry will be asked to provide details of their current sporting activity, including their specific sport(s), level of representation, and frequency of training and competition. A reference from a current teacher or coach should also be provided.

A general expectation would be that applicants for a sports scholarship are performing regularly in a club or non-school setting in at least one of the school’s focus sports (cricket, football, hockey, netball).

Sports scholarship applicants will be invited to an assessment day which will include the following:

  • Physical fitness testing (agility, endurance, power, and speed)
  • Sports specific assessment (pupils choose one of the following – cricket, football, hockey, netball)

For those applicants whose main sport is not a focus sport at Chigwell, a video of their sporting performance should be provided as well as their attendance at the assessment day.

We would expect that sports scholars are not only able to perform to a high level but are also outstanding ambassadors for Chigwell School sport and excellent role models for the school community. Scholars will demonstrate a strong commitment to school sport and display sporting values such as respect, fair play, humility, dedication, discipline, and passion.

All sports scholars will automatically be included in our Junior Sports Academy (Y7&8) before progressing to our Aspiring Athletes Programme (Y9-13). These programmes are tailored to provide support for our high performing sportsmen and women appropriate to their age, and will include regular strength and conditioning training, nutrition advice, specialist seminars, and mentoring from a member of the sports department.

Candidates are expected to pass our 11+ or 13+ entrance examination.
