Information for applicants
Chigwell offers several scholarships to boys and girls with musical potential for entrance into the School. Approximately three major awards are given to pupils at 11+. Further awards are offered at 13+ entry and the Sixth Form. Scholarships of up to 25% of tuition fees (plus financial contribution for tuition on two instruments) are made annually to instrumentalists and singers, and in cases of financial need, further consideration may be given to an exceptionally talented or accomplished candidate.
The School has a thriving music department with four full-time members of staff and twenty-five visiting teachers. There are a variety of orchestras, choirs, wind bands and jazz groups, as well as many other ensembles which flourish and perform at major concerts during the year, some of which take place in the local community.
Music scholars are a key part of the musical life of Chigwell; they form the basis of most groups and are invited to participate in the planning and organising of concerts and musical events. They need to be, of course, musically motivated, committed to both their instruments and music-making in groups, and prepared to contribute to school music in a major way. In return, they receive special attention from the music staff to monitor progress, ensure an even spread of commitments and assist with their musical development.
The Audition:
Successful candidates are likely to possess considerable musical potential. The standard required is usually at least Grade 4 on the main instrument at age 11, with an appropriate adjustment for other age groups. However, candidates who have not reached this level should not be deterred from applying. A second instrument, or singing, should also be offered, of approximately Grade 2 standard, or above.
Preparation:
Candidates should prepare one piece on each instrument. Pieces should be selected carefully; we shall be looking for musicianship and potential rather than mere technical ability, so a simpler piece played well will be more beneficial to the candidate than a technically demanding work that is only just within reach.
Attention should also be paid to sight-reading and aural tests which are of equal importance to the pieces played.
Conduct of the Audition:
All candidates are required to send a copy of their accompaniment at least 2 weeks before the audition.
An accompanist will be provided when required by Chigwell School. Candidates will have the opportunity to rehearse with the accompanist before the audition. Once in the audition room, candidates will be invited to warm-up thoroughly and try the piano if required.
Candidates are advised to bring spare reeds, strings etc. Please note that photocopied music is not acceptable. There will be a short interview at the end of the audition, with an opportunity for the candidate to ask questions.
Candidates are expected to pass our academic entrance examination.
Applications:
Applications for music scholarships should be noted on the registration form. Application forms will then be sent out via email and should be returned to Jane Jackson:
If you have any further questions on the audition of music scholarships in general, the Director of Music, Mr H.J.G. Ebden, will be very happy to give advice.
