Our 16+ Scholarship Programme

At Chigwell, we pride ourselves on giving young people the space to thrive; we consider this space crucial to fulfilling our objectives – namely to promote in all Chigwellians creativity, ingenuity and independent thought. We value academic excellence but realise that excellence is not exclusively academic. Hence, we have put in place a wide ranging Scholars’ programme that we believe delivers the space and opportunity for our students to excel.

Irrespective of the type of award they receive, all High Achievers join our High Performance Programme and have termly review sessions with the Academic Deputy Head, the Head of High Achievers and their pupil mentor to discuss their engagement with the various strands of the Programme. Academic scholarships are awarded to the top students who exhibit academic excellence and a passion for learning. We have first-class teaching and inspirational teachers who are passionate about their subjects. Beyond the curriculum, there is a broad range of subject enrichment to stretch and challenge those with particular interests and talents. This includes the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which is highly regarded by universities and there is a wide range of clubs and competitions.

The School has a thriving music department with four full-time members of staff and twenty-six visiting instrumental teachers, covering all one-to-one practical instrumental and singing lessons. There are a significant number and variety of orchestras, ensembles and choirs to cater for all standards and experience of pupils. All groups flourish and perform at major concerts during the year, some of which take place in the local community.

Pupils taking A Level Drama can opt to take light, sound and costume (including make-up) and set design instead of, or as well as, acting. Chigwell is special in offering all the design options available at these levels. We have a fully qualified theatre technician and a professional make-up artist who works with pupils. Chigwell has its own state-of-the-art 150-seat theatre. In addition to the main auditorium, it includes a green room, rehearsal and teaching spaces, dressing rooms and a foyer.

The most recent addition to our scholarship programme is our sport scholarship. We have a new Director of Sport as well as state-of-the-art facilities in our Sport and Wellness Centre which opened last year, and are also excited to be offering PE A Level from September 2024.

Art and Design Scholarships are available at 16+ to young people with exceptional creative potential, passion and talent.
