Musician of the Year
The eighth Musician of the Year Competition held on April 24, reached the highest standard ever, not least by our Junior Competitors, many of whom set the standard at Grade 7 and above. The adjudicator, Mrs Maggie Donnelly, Director of Music at the City of London School for Girls, had the unenviable task of choosing the eight musicians (from all the 34 auditioned) who performed in the prestigious final in the evening. However, all competitors throughout the day should be congratulated on their very polished performances. After much agonising, Mrs Maggie Donnelly awarded the Junior Musician of the Year to Beatrice Moore and the Senior award to David Winters, with Becky Briggs and Chris Wilson both being highly commended. The evening was a huge celebration: not just of the very high standard of music that was on show, but also the wonderful atmosphere amongst the musicians at Chigwell, who are very supportive of each other. |

The Bunburies Cricket Charity Match
The rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of all the pupils, staff and parents who worked so hard to make a huge success of the annual cricket celebrities’ match on Sunday April 27. The fundraising event helped to raise £5,000 for the children’ s charity, Barnardo’s. The Bunbury XI this year included well-know personalities from the worlds of sport, TV and radio. David English, Sam Fox, ex-Arsenal Perry Groves, actor Bradley Walsh and cricket’s heroes, Devon Malcolm and Mark Ramprakash, were among those taking part. Chigwell’s Headmaster’s XI beat The Bunbury XI in a well-contested match. We are most grateful to all the staff, parents and pupils who helped before and on the day and of course to Mr Nick Tester, who master-minded the whole event. |

Mr Kazuo Ishiguro’s talk to Sixth Formers
Mr Kazuo Ishiguro, the acclaimed contemporary writer, gave a most interesting talk to Sixth Formers, staff and pupils on Tuesday 22nd April in the Drama Centre. Mr Ishiguro’s novels are widely read and hugely enjoyed by many readers (and translated in 20 countries). Since his debut novel in 1982, A Pale view of the Hills, he wrote An Artist of the Floating World (Whitbread book of the year in 1989) and his third book, The Remains of the Day, was also filmed and won the Booker. Other three successful novels followed, The Unconsoled in 1995, When we were Orphans in 2000 and Never let me go in 2005. The perfect use of language, the sense of mystery and the metaphorical framework of his stories are some of the elements that distinguish his remarkable work. However, what perhaps struck the audience most were his charisma, modesty and accessibility and willingness to share with our pupils some of secrets of his trade. He also gave good advice to those who may wish to follow his muse in creative writing. Chigwell felt very privileged for his visit. |

Fun Run raises £1,600 for charity
The wonderful Chigwell’s annual Fun Run took place on Sunday 20th April and totalled £1,600 for local charities. Mrs Gill Punt started the race (four laps round Chigwell’s extensive 70 acres playing fields) and the winner was one of our parents, Mr Ronald Daniel. It was good to see so many parents, staff and their families enjoying the day.
Those who did not run had good time browsing the many stalls in New Hall, eating delicious cakes made by parents, playing crazy golf and shooting bows and arrows. We are of course grateful to all the parents, pupils and staff who worked very hard to make a success of the day. |

U13 Cricket Tour to Dubai
Mr Nick Tester, together with Mr James Stedman and Mrs Jenny Gwinn, led a group of 18 U13 pupils to Dubai, for a week long cricket tour, as part of their pre-season training. The tour incorporated three matches against local opposition on three different wicket surfaces of concrete, grass and Astroturf, in temperatures ranging between 33°-36°C.
On the first day the group went to the Abu Dhabi stadium to see Yorkshire v Sussex, a game in the Arabian Cricket Challenge which also included Lancashire and Essex. The pupils watched from a VIP box, had a training session in the nets and then met all the players, including England internationals Darren Gough, Chris Adams and Luke Wright. What a great start to the tour!
On the second day the group played their first match in the beautiful surroundings of Zabeel Park, but on the unfamiliar surface of concrete! Despite losing the match, impressive performances came from Albert Padfield and Sid Koak.
On the third day the group travelled to the 27,000 capacity Stadium in Sharjah to play against the Dubai Academy. Chigwell bowled economically for most of the first innings before some big hitting from the lower order led the Academy to 142-5 off their 25 overs. Cordelia Griffith, the only girl in the team and the current Essex girls U13 Captain, impressed with two maiden overs in a row at the start of the innings. In every game Cordelia played, the opposition coaches remarked how impressed they were with her cricket. Safwaan Imtiaz, (Essex boys U11 cricketer of the year last season) hit a majestic 50, an innings of class in baking hot conditions. Dominic Higgins and Sag Kugathansan also made valuable runs, however, Chigwell fell just short, losing by 20 runs. In the afternoon the group was invited to Delhi Private School in Sharjah to participate in a 6-a-side tournament to mark the retirement of the school’s Headmistress. The players were divided into three different teams and the shorter format of the game seemed to inspire them. One of our teams, captained by Asim Shamsudin, got through to the final, played under floodlights at 8.30pm, and was awarded a trophy. Individual players’ trophies were also awarded to Safwaan Imtiaz, Sag Kugathansan and Nickolai Aoun..
|
|

The final match was played on Astroturf against Delhi Private School, Dubai. Nickolai Aoun top scored with 29 but the best innings came from Neel Chudasama, who batted with great maturity and growing confidence. The opposition were initially restricted by some tight bowling from Alex Morrow and Jason Driver, however, some late hitting meant the opposition won with three overs to spare.
The last day was a tourists dream when the group visited the Wild Wadi water park, home to the world's second biggest water slide, next to the famous Burj Al Arab 7* hotel. This was followed by a 'dune bashing', 4x4 ride over the desert dunes. The day ended at the desert safari camp where the pupils were able to experience some of the local Arab culture, including the chance to have a henna tattoo, a camel ride and enjoy a belly dancing show!
The tournament made all the participants fully appreciate the passion for cricket in the United Arab Emirates and our pupils made an excellent impression wherever they went. It really was a fantastic week for cricket!

We are delighted to announce that many of our pupils once again took part in the Stratford Festival of Music and Drama and there were many notable performances in this, though the one person who must be named is Marianne Schonle, one of our music scholars, who not only won her category, but was then invited to perform in the Festival's Musician of the Year competition which she won, despite competing again students of 18 when she is only 12!
This is a truly remarkable achievement. |

The Hans Woyda Maths Challenge
Our Mathematics Quiz team, comprising Yuqing Zhang, Xiao Qian Lin, Andrew Liddell, Alastair Morton and Neroshen Mohan, has performed extremely well to reach the Quarter Final stages of the Hans Woyda Inter-Schools Mathematics Quiz competition. Our mathematicians won their group matches against local rivals (Bancroft's, Forest (tie) and Ilford County High School) to reach the knockout stages and then defeated Notting Hill and Ealing High School to set up a tense battle against Merchant Taylor's School (the same team that knocked them out at the same stage last year). If the team could secure victory in this quarter final it would, in all probability, set up a semi final match against hot favourites Westminster. A prospect that our team would savour! |

U11 IAPS Hockey Tournament
On February 19 our U11 Hockey Team took part in the South East IAPS Tournament which was held at Haileybury School. The boys started against the eventual winners, Greshams Prep, and unfortunately lost 4-0 after having arrived 2 minutes before they were due to start. Results improved over the next two games with a 1-0 victory against Woodford Green Prep with William Sibley striking home and a 2-1 victory against South Lee School with the impressive Edward Tyler bagging a brace. These results ensured the team finished 2nd in their group and qualified them for the Cup competition and the top 8 of 16 teams. Chigwell drew their first game of the cup competition with their best performance of the day. Chigwell had much of the possession and the boys were extremely unfortunate not to win the game against St Andrew's. Defenders Jamie Colton, Matthew Higgins and Ravi Taheam engaged in some strong tackling which left goalkeeper Daniel Mahoney as a mere spectator in the match. Joint Captain Chris Halls showed some excellent skills in midfield. Buoyed by the performance, Chigwell knew that a victory in their last two games would probably send them through to the semi-finals of the competition and more importantly a place in the national finals. But despite creating chances against two strong teams, the Abbey School and Culford School, the boys lost both games by 1-0. This meant they had to settle for third in their group and 5/6th place overall. However, this was a great achievement considering the calibre of the opposition and the fact the boys had had only two games and no training sessions before the tournament. Hugo Blogg, Tom Turner and Ben Good also represented the team. Mr Creag Lawrence said: “ All the boys conducted themselves in a dignified manner throughout the day and were a credit to the School. “

Junior Success in Science Competition
A team of four Upper Two scientists took part in the annual Forest School Junior Science Competition on Feburary 6. Our pupils competed against 21 other schools (both independent and state) and won second place, just ahead of Forest School! The winning team was from Gidea Park Primary. The children had to unravel three sets of chemistry-based tasks, working with bunsen burners, chemicals and common sense. Their technical observational and cooperative skills were tested throughout the afternoon. In addition to achieving second place, our team came back with a gift book each and a jointly held prize of a working, remote controlled model helicopter.

U13 Football News
The Under 13 A Football team played Brentwood School in the Semi - Finals of the ISFA Cup competition on Thursday, 24th January at home. Both teams had battled through a number of rounds to reach this stage of the competition. Brentwood started the match as clear favourites as they had three academy players and are a much larger school than Chigwell. Our team, however, played with tremendous spirit and determination and started the game well, they gave absolutely everything and never gave up despite eventually losing 3-0. Well done to every player involved in the squad. There is no shame in defeat when you show the commitment shown by every Chigwell player and with this sort of attitude they will win a lot more games than they lose. |

Government League Tables
In the latest version of the Government league tables for secondary schools in England it would appear that Chigwell School has achieved a figure of 33% of pupils gaining 5 or more GCSEs, grade A* to C.
The reason for this is that the tables specify that the five must include GCSE mathematics and English. Last summer, for the first time, our Upper Fifth pupils took the International GCSE (IGCSE) mathematics examination. This qualification, although highly thought of by universities and employers, is not included in Government league tables. If it were, our figure would be 100%.
We are committed to providing the most appropriate examination courses for our pupils and we moved to IGCSE mathematics, like many other comparable schools, because it provides a more interesting and challenging course for our students. Many Chigwell pupils go on to take A level maths and we find IGCSE a better preparation for this. We will continue to choose courses that stretch and enthuse our pupils and we will not be bound by league tables.
Headmaster Mr Michael Punt, Deputy Head Mr David Gower or Director of Studies Mr Neil Saunders would be happy to discuss this matter further. |

Torch Trophy for Mr Ken Richbell
We are enormously proud to announce that Mr Ken Richbell, our splendid Head Porter and Caretaker, received the Torch Trophy Trust award from the Duke of Kent on Thursday 29th November 2007at the Army and Navy Club in Pall Mall. The Trust , founded in 1949, provides small Bursaries to assist volunteers in sport and presents Awards to individuals who have been identified as making an outstanding contribution as a volunteer in their chosen sport. The President of the Trust is Sir Bobby Charlton.
Ken was nominated by Buckhurst Hill Junior F. C., where he has been an active member since 1995, initially as a parent watching his son train and play at the club, but gradually becoming increasingly involved as assistant manager to the team in 1997, after which they won their league in season 1997/1998. Ken's constant enthusiasm and dedication came to fruition when he was voted in as Chairman of the club in 2000, when he was determined to make the club one of the best in Essex.
Shortly after his election the club faced closure as a result of an arson attack on the ground. Ken immediately embarked on the enormous task of rebuilding and restructuring the club by designating a significant amount of time and work to raise £500,000 from various grants, authorities and foundations, to enable them to purchase the land and build a new clubhouse. Thanks to Ken the club is now recognized by the FA Charter Standard and has a gold accreditation given by The Essex Sports Clubs.
Apart from his involvement in the training and development of the players, Ken can also be found contributing as groundsman, refereeing other local matches, sitting on various management and found raising committees and being the club's child welfare officer, a truly committed volunteer in every sense. |

Hammers' bound
On Friday 7th December, 21 UII boys went with Mr Creag Lawrence to Upton Park, home of West Ham United FC for a football education afternoon. On arriving at the ground the pupils were met by Paul Ruck (West Ham Football in the Community) who led them into the home team dressing room and walked them down the players' tunnel and onto the hallowed Upton Park pitch for a 45-minute coaching sessions. After the training, the pupils enjoyed the view from the dugout, the away team dressing room and the media centre. The tour was completed with a visit to the players lounge and then to the Chairman's suite. All the pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves; it was a deserved reward for all the hard work they put into their football during the Michaelmas term. |

U16 Girls win the Essex County Hockey Tournament Head of Hockey, Mr Chris Mills is delighted to announce that our U16 Girls Team have won the Essex County Hockey Tournament!
After winning their four group games, against Coopers Coburn, Brentwood, Hallmead and Sacred Heart our U16 girls qualified at the top. They then faced Bancrofts in the semi final. The local darby ended 1-0 to Chigwell, meaning that they had to face Felsted in the final. The final was a well balanced, exciting game, however the 0-0 score line meant that the winners had to be decided on penalties - always a nerve racking way to decide a match! Luckily the girls had a penalty flick practice only minutes before the final (an inspired decision by Mr Chris Mills). Our goalkeeper Fiona Brown pulled out a remarkable performance saving all five of the Felsted flicks whilst Millie Morgan and Emily O'Connor slotted theirs enabling Chigwell to win by two clear goals. The tension was unbearable, Emily O'Connor has now experienced of what Johnny Wilkinson goes through! Mr Mills said: "This is a remarkable achievement, the girls deserve their success and we are very grateful to coach Mr James Stedman for all his hard work that paid off.' |

Mathematics, magic and the electric guitar
The Sixth Form lectures series at Chigwell opened last Thursday September 27 with Dr David Acheson, Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics, Jesus College Oxford, and author of the bestseller “1089 and all that”, who took the fascinated audience on a magical journey into mathematics. With his lecture Dr Acheson was able to share with non-mathematicians some of the beauty and wonders of this subject, such as the arithmetic magic trick of the number “1089” (seemingly different sums that always give the answer “1089”) and the Indian rope trick. |

Chigwell winner of the U11 Netball Tournament
The annual Chigwell School U11 Netball Tournament took place on Saturday 15th September and saw 24 teams play a total of 9 matches each, on a gloriously sunny day. It was wonderful to see so many girls take part in the event, and great to see so many supporters too. Overall, the standard of play was very high, and as always, it was a great event to get the girls focussed on the sport at the start of the season.
For the first time ever Chigwell School came first, having faced some tough opposition during the course of the morning. Their coach, Amanda Newton (current England netball captain, who is away in Jamaica in preparation for the forthcoming World Cup) was delighted to hear of the news, although sad she was not there to witness it. |

Chigwell School U11 Football Tournament
Chigwell School hosted its U11 7-a-side football tournament on Saturday 15 September, and it was a huge success! Twenty-five teams participated, each playing four games in the group stages. All the players, coaches and parents experienced a fantastic day as all the teams exhibited a very high level of sportsmanship. Hereward School won the final against Chigwell A team on penalties, both teams were outstanding and both should have won!
Chigwell's A team made a great showing, incorporating some new players for the first time, and exhibiting excellent teamwork throughout the day. Ravi Taheem was an excellent defender throughout the day, making many important challenges. Edward Tyler played on through an injury and set up several of Chigwell's goals. Jonathon Robson was consistent in every position he played, always having positive comments to offer to his teammates. The team was rounded out by the goal scorers: Lovett, Poulter, Felstead, Halls, Good, and especially Higgins, who led the team through all of the knockout matches. Sibley was phenomenal in goal all day, getting his hands to many of the penalties, and keeping the Chigwell side in many of the games with his acrobatic saves. |

Jordan Spence (OC)
Old Chigwellian Jordan Spence’s football career is flourishing. Jordan, who is currently West Ham United’s young defender and England U17’s captain during the current World Youth Cup in South Korea, was the star of the show as it was him who scored a late winner against Brazil. The result means that England U17s have taken the top spot from Brazil in Group B in the competition. Jordan Spence has now captained his country for the last two seasons, at both Under-16 and Under-17 level, including at the UEFA European Championships in May when England finished runners-up, losing to Spain in the Final, Jordan appearing in all 5 matches.
Jordan attended Chigwell School from the age of 7, until he left at 16 at the end of the Summer Term 2006 to sign for West Ham United. He has already appeared in the West Ham Reserve Team. |

GCSE RESULTS 2007
Following the success of their A level colleagues, who last week managed to achieve record results with 84% at either A or B grade, GCSE students at Chigwell also have plenty to celebrate. 66% of grades awarded were either A or A*, the highest ever, and 100% of passes were at grades A*- C.
Headmaster, Mr Michael Punt, commented: "I am delighted that Chigwellians who worked so hard for their GCSEs have been rewarded with these excellent grades. Many pupils have achieved success across the board in nine or ten different subjects and I am very proud of them and grateful to their teachers who prepared them so thoroughly."
There were a number of individual successes including: Nick Raj Birdi, who gained 10 A* grades, Matthew O' Connor 9A*'s and an A, Felcity Osborn 9A*'s and an A, Shanil Shivji 8 A*'s and 2 A's and Jagveen Tyndall 8 A*'s and 2 A's.
Special mention should also be made of Jaga Johal, Nick - Raj Birdi, Jayveen Tyndall and Matthew O'Connor who were amongst the candidates who scored one of the top five marks, nationwide, in their Religious Studies GCSE. 22210 candidates entered for this examination and so this is an exceptional achievement. |

A LEVEL RESULTS 2007
Teachers and pupils at Chigwell are absolutely delighted with the A level results. 84% of grades awarded were either A or B - the best ever - and the pass rate was 100%. One third of pupils achieved at least three A grades. At AS 71% of grades were either A or B, again the best ever.
“These results” Mr Michael Punt said “ are a fitting reward for all the hard work of Chigwell pupils and their teachers. Many have participated in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and still achieved outstanding academic success as well. We are particularly pleased that so many Chigwellians have gained university places of their choice, particularly at a time when competition for many university courses is so fierce.” |

U11 Boys Hockey Team Winners at Greshams Hockey Festival
Chigwell’s U11 Boys Hockey team recently took part in the Greshams School Hockey Festival which attracts many well known Hockey schools from all over the country. The format for the event was an indoor tournament and outdoor friendly tournament over 3 days with the pupils playing 15 matches. The outdoor tournament was played with great spirit and allowed the pupils to enjoy their hockey with no pressure. In the indoor tournament Chigwell won their group with hard fought victories over Greshams, Taverham Hall, Norfolk and Bilton Grange (Rugby). This resulted in Chigwell progressing to the final to play Greshams School who beat St Faith's, Cambridge after a play-off. An electric atmosphere was created by the home crowd but this did not deter the Chigwell players who went into the lead through an excellent goal by Josh Banfield after good work by captain William Godfrey and Adam Dackombe. Chigwell kept tight and defended well with Jack Nolan and Rory Taylor thwarting every Greshams attack. Greshams won a short corner at the end of time, knowing that they had one last opportunity to try and force extra-time. Greshams had obviously worked on their short corners and were able to get a shot away, only for Lucas Watts to become the hero with a sublime save. The ball was cleared and Chigwell became the well deserved champions. Congratulations must go to the remaining members of the squad which consisted of Adam Hooper, Jack Redmond, Henry Bate and Inderdeep Gill. |

The Bunbury’s XI v The Headmaster’s XI Cricket Charity Match
On Sunday 29th April the Bunbury’s XI , the celebrities’ cricket team captained by the charismatic Mr David English, met the Headmaster’s XI in a cricket match in aid of the Bunburies’ diverse charities and of Haven House Foundation.
The Bunburies won the match, scoring 189, the Headmaster's XI managed to score 172. There were over 1000 people supporting the event, and players such as Devon Malcolm, Bradley Walsh, Chris Lewis, Douglas Hondo, Samantha Fox, Kevin Miller (Watford F.C), Lloyd Honeyghan and Rudolph Walker (Patrick from Eastenders) amongst many others made the day feel very special. In the evening, James Foster (Essex C.C.C and England) came to join the post event party and over two thousand pounds was raised on the auction alone, with the star prize being an Australian shirt signed by Shane Warne. The School is very proud of Nick Tester who has worked incredibly hard to put on the event with Mr David English and we are very pleased to hear that Mr English will bring a team back next year! The Bunburies have raised millions for charity over seven years and we hope to have raised up to £ 10,000 on this occasion. |

Chigwell Fun Run
The Fun Run on Sunday 29th April was a fantastic occasion, the event turned out to be one of the most entertaining in the history of Chigwell’s fundraising, thanks to Mr David English who started the race and lit up the place with his lively and acute commentary. Mrs Carroll’s hard work and the commitment of parents, pupils and staff produced over £2,500 for charity. The monies will be donated to ELHAP and to the sustainable development community projects, which a number of our Sixth Form pupils are working with this summer in Africa and South America.

Laura Neal playwriting success
Great news from the Drama Department: Sixth Former Laura Neal has not only just become a member of the National Youth Theatre, remarkably, she has also been commissioned to write a new full-length play for the Hull Truck Theatre Company. This came about from her recent work at the National Student Drama Festival, where Hull Truck set up a competition for new writers (aimed primarily at undergraduates/postgraduates) to write new works for them to perform. The company is internationally renowned, established in the early 1970's by Mike Bradwell and is possibly most famous for working with John Godber over the years. Laura's achievement here is astounding. Having attended workshops with Hull Truck at the Festival in Scarborough and written a short play at the end of those workshop sessions, she was selected from the great many entrants to have her short piece performed on the final day with a shortlist of about 6 others. She beat all the other entrants to win this hugely prestigious commission. So - a 17 year old gets to write a new play for a fantastic, famous theatre company to be professionally staged next year. This is truly an amazing achievement. |

Football Tour to Valencia
The Middle School football development teams were flown out to Spain to train and play as Valencia Football Club's guests at their first team training quarters. The U14 and U15 squads arrived on February 11 in bright sunshine to be greeted by their academy coaches for the week. Throughout their stay, the players were put through rigorous training sessions in order to develop both their knowledge and technical skills of the game. The teams also had the opportunity of mixing with players such as Fernando Morientes (formally of Liverpool F.C), David Villa (arguably the best striker in Europe at this moment) and Miguel (the Portuguese national right back). The Chigwell contingent also got the opportunity to attend the Villareal match against Deportivo La Coruna, watching “legends” such as Diego Forlan and ex-Arsenal hero Pascal Cygan. |

| Barcelona Hockey Tour
The five-day Hockey Tour to Barcelona at the beginning of January offered our girls a real international experience competing in the prestigious Hockey Reyes Tournament held at the city’s exclusive Polo Club.
The tournament boasted 40 of the top hockey clubs from across the world; in the junior women's group our girls found themselves up against strong club sides from Holland, Spain and Belgium.
The girls’ performances developed as the tournament progressed. They started the tournament playing against the eventual winners of the group, the highly impressive 'MOP' hockey club from Holland, ending the game facing a somewhat misleading 8-1 score line. The second match against a very skilful Spanish club side, 'Athletico Terrassa', saw our girls level the game to 3-3. The final match against a Belgian club called 'Victory' saw Chigwell win the game 2-1. As a result, at the end of the tournament, Chigwell came 3rd out of 6 sides, after the Dutch MOP side and our local rivals, Felsted School. This was a highly creditable result considering the standard of our opponents, and was a fitting end to a successful season that started in Cape Town in July 2006.
The girls also enjoyed numerous social activities in and around Barcelona, including the tournament's official black tie dinner, a trip to the Nou Camp Stadium and numerous strolls down Las Ramblas! |

Finding out about Europe in Brussels
A group of twenty Sixth Formers were welcomed, at the beginning of Lent Term, to the European Parliament in Brussels by their local MEP, Mr Geoffrey Van Orden. They all took part in lively discussions.
Mr Van Orden is a convinced Eurosceptic , however, the students has also a chance of hearing a contrasting opinion from Mr Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, a German MEP, who is in favour of many issues about the EU.
Mr Yuravlivker, who led the group together with Mr Paul Marchant, said that It was very stimulating for students to visit the European Parliament and see for themselves the work done by their local MEP who stands up for British interests. |

Sixth Form Geography Trip to Iceland
A group of 19 VI Formers, led by Mr Jerry Morris, Mr David Hartland and Mrs Valerie Richardson, went on an exciting geography fieldtrip to Iceland over the first week of the October half term.
The group took advantage of the island’s widespread availability of geothermal energy by going for a swim in the relaxing steam waters of the Blue Lagoon just outside Reykjavik. The trip involved looking at ice caps, spectacular waterfalls, geysers, visiting a geothermal power station and walking to the top of an active volcano! The highlight for many was being able to see the northern lights, a glittering display of green light dancing across the sky. The trip was a great success and enjoyed by all who went on it. Many pupils remarked that it had been the best trip they had been on and one individual commented that ‘Iceland is just Geography Land’. Others decided that they were now going to do Geography at University because it had so much of an impact on them. We hope to make this trip a permanent fixture in the Chigwell School calendar. |

Back in the USSR
Thirty Chigwellians, from IVth Form right through to MVI, led by Mr Jason Porter, braved the temperatures of -6C and ventured to Moscow and St Petersburg on a six-day cultural trip during the last week of the Michaelmas half term holiday. The trip included a visit to Lenin's Tomb, Red Square, entry to the Kremlin, sightseeing tours of Moscow and an eight-hour journey in a Trans-Siberian style sleeper train to the Northern City of St Petersburg. In this beautiful city they visited School 105, which is now Chigwell’s Russian partner school and here they received an amazing hospitality. The pupils prepared a performance in honour of the Chigwell contingent who were all very impressed by the Russians’ musical talents. In St Petersburg the group visited the Hermitage museum and Winter Palace, the architectural beauty of the latter is second only in the world to the Louvre. The trip was a resounding success in every way and by the end of the week the pupils returned tired but full of enthusiasm for their next visit to Russia. |

Chigwell School U11 Girls Soccer
On Tuesday 10th October 2006, history was made at Chigwell School as the Girls Football team played their first competitive fixture. The U11 girls team played in the Redbridge Primary Schools 6- a-side Tournament at Redbridge Ladies FC. Twelve girls played, this meant substitutions every four minutes to allow all of them to play the same amount of time. After losing the first game 1-0, Chigwell responded with a 3-1 victory over Mossford Green with goals from Zoe Garnish, Sophie Al-Mudallal and Paige Culley. In their final group game Chigwell lost 3-1 with the consolation goal being scored by Ursula Marshall. Woodford Green Prep were the opponents in the quarter final and proved to be too strong for the Chigwell girls. Cordelia Griffith and Penny Williams were superb in goal with Anna-Maria Thamotharam-Pillai, Katie Marshall, Lauren Drabwell, Sophie Barrett, Juliette Aliker and Caitlin Saunders all representing the team with superb sportsmanship. |

U11 Netball and Football Tournaments
on September 16
U11 Netball Tournament
This year 23 schools entered the Chigwell Netball Tournament, and with Chigwell entering two teams, 24 teams competed in total. The standard of play, as always, was good, with some teams demonstrating excellent skills for girls aged 10. It was a great day and each team played eight matches in total. This gave the girls lots of opportunity to develop their skills over the course of the morning. They also had the opportunity to meet Amanda Newton, a current Senior England netball player. Many girls enjoyed getting her autograph and took home information about the Chigwell School netball course taking place
during the October half term, which she and other current England players will be running.
Congratulations go to St. Aubyn's for winning the tournament. Forest School came second and Chigwell A team third.
U-11 Football Tournament
25 local schools entered the football tournament with Woodford Green Prep defeating St Anthony's in the final. All teams played with great spirit and sportsmanship. |

The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew
The Junior School performance of the classic comedy by Robert Bolt on July 5,6 and 7 was a marvellous production for all age groups. The audience was brought to a land where the last dragon in the world competes with the knights for attention. The strong cast of thirty-one junior pupils was wonderfully supported by the technical crew; parents also helped with the making of the colourful costumes. |

Cricket Developments
Developments in school cricket are moving fast. With consistent work being done with all the squads by our cricket professional Frank Griffith (ex Derbyshire C.C.C), improvements are being seen every week. PE teacher and Essex Coach Nick Tester said, "We are really excited to see the way in which cricket is moving at Chigwell School. Under David Morrison (Head of Cricket for 31 years), and with the mixture of one to one coaching and team coaching that Frank Griffith gives the pupils, coupled with the expert help of people like James Foster (our new Essex C.C.C and England wicket-keeping coach), we can be sure that cricket at Chigwell is in safe hands for the future."

Easter Trip to Bilbao
A group of VI Form pupils led by Miss Avani Hurribunce, Mr Simon Coppell and Mr Robert Ogle visited one of Spain's best kept secrets over the Easter holidays. Bilbao is a beautiful city in northern Spain and is the capital of the Basque region, a very historic area with its own unique culture and language. During the four-days stay, the group had the chance to sample the many delights of the city and its surrounding area. The highlight was the fantastic Guggenheim museum of modern art, in its superb building, which houses a great variety of modern art and a great exhibition of Russian art. The group also visited the coastal resort of Getxo, on the Bay of Biscay, and Guernica. The latter is where unprecedented atrocities were perpetrated in 1936 on behalf of Franco against the civilian population chosen for bombing practice by Hitler's burgeoning war machine. The hamlet was pounded with high-explosive and incendiary bombs for over three hours. Sixteen hundred civilians were killed or wounded. The massacre of course was Picasso’s inspiration for his mural, Guernica. The group also managed to relax in the evenings, shopping and enjoying café culture with Bilbao's famous pinchos or tapas and, of course, they managed to practise mucho castellano! |

Jordan Spence signs on with West Ham
Prior to kick-off on Sunday April 2nd, Jordan Spence signed his first full-time contract with the West Ham United FC. Jordan, who is captain of the England under-16 team, has been at Upton Park since the age of 14 and will join the Academy full-time team this summer. A versatile performer, Jordan is comfortable as a central defender or midfielder, and has already appeared for the under-18 side on a number of occasions this season. Academy Director Tony Carr said: "Jordan is a very talented young boy who has developed well over the past 12 months. He has experience with our under-18 team already and has represented England on a number of occasions at schoolboy level. He has equipped himself very well at both club and international level and we believe that, if he continues to progress and show the same dedication and enthusiasm, he is definitely one for the future." Needless to say, Chigwell is very proud of him! |

Unprecedented Success for Chigwell Hockey
The U15 girls’ Hockey team made school history by coming first in Essex Hockey Tournament.
Despite the week's wetness, girls from this year's U15 hockey team, augmented by a few girls from the year below, prepared for and dominated the Essex Tournament. With only a few practices in the Lent Term, the girls established team unity and quickly brushed up on their hockey skills. Led by captain Chelsey Toms, the day began with an extensive warm-up in which the girls fine-tuned their penalty corner plays. The team knew that focused play was needed from the first minute of the first match against Brentwood, who had beaten the Chigwell U15 side by a margin of over 5 goals earlier in the season. Brentwood's fierce attack controlled the first half's play, although Chigwell's capable defence including goalkeeper Rosey Shafier thwarted their attempts at a goal. However, Laura Blatter notched an early goal, later matched by Brentwood in the second half. Dramatically, in the final minutes of the match, Chigwell's corner unit scored a goal, securing a victory against the team that became the tournament's runners-up. The second match, against Newport Free Grammar School, was once again placing Chigwell against a team that had neatly beaten the girls earlier in the season. Chigwell, enthused by their first victory, scored two first half goals, and later allowed one in. |
|

The third match, against King John's, admittedly Chigwell's least skilful performance, still gained another Chigwell victory. The final match of the day, against last year's winners, Chelmsford High, witnessed outstanding play from every Chigwell athlete involved, resulting in a confident 2-0 result. With such impressive competition, the Chigwell team demonstrated fortitude and poise by playing such solid hockey and becoming the unexpected Essex U15 champions. |

U15 Football Tour to Valencia
The U15 football squad enjoyed a very successful tour to Valencia CF over the half-term holiday. The team was coached by Valencia CF Academy coaches. Goalkeeper James Scott was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to work with the first team’s goalkeeping coach and the reserve team’s goalkeepers. A typical day saw the squad take part in both morning and afternoon training sessions, with three matches against local schools squeezed into the tight schedule. The most notable highlights of the tour were undoubtedly the trip to watch Valencia CF vs Barcelona FC in the Mastella stadium, and the visit to Madrid to watch Real Madrid vs Real Zaragoza in the famous Bernabeu stadium. The penultimate day of the tour saw the squad camp outside the first team players training entrance to hunt for autographs and pose for photos with Valencia’s international stars including Pablo Aimar, David Villa, Canaizares and Valencia legend Amedeo Carboni. A visit into the cultural heart of Valencia in blazing sunshine was a fine end to a fabulous tour. Photos and Video of the experience are located here. |

Tony Blair meets the LVI
Our LVI students went on a ‘Politics” trip to Westminster and met Tony Blair!
This was the annual Lower VI Government/Politics trip to Westminster, arranged again by a Chigwell School parent who works in the Cabinet Office. Our students toured the Houses of Parliament in the morning and met with various senior civil servants in the Cabinet Office and PMO in Whitehall. Whilst walking from Parliament to their afternoon meetings, the group spotted the Prime Minister walking along Whitehall. He was well ahead of them, but they caught up just as he was about to enter the gated area of Downing Street.
"Mr. Prime Minister," Mr Yuravlivker called out. He turned his head. "Do you have time for a school group photo?"
Mr Blair said yes, so he came back around the barrier, shook hands with Mr Yuravlivker and several of the students, asked where they were from, and then posed for the photograph. The whole thing took only two or three minutes, but it was certainly the high point of their day! |

Staff Pantomime
Last week some of the staff at Chigwell School took to the boards to present the pantomime Sleeping Beauty.
Directed by Sixth Former Enver Chakartash, it played to a full house on both nights and raised over £2100 for local children's hospice Haven House. The show contained all the usual pantomime ingredients including slapstick routines and audience participation as well as a cameo appearance from the Headmaster.
Mr David Gower said: ‘The staff did tremendously well to learn all their lines in just over a week on top of their usual teaching and coaching. It was tiring but great fun to do as well as very pleasing to be able to give a large donation to
our local charity.' |

Godspell
At the end of the Michaelmas term the Drama Centre presented the popular 70s’ musical Godspell .
Against a backdrop of military imagery, the cast played out a series of colourful comic vignettes. From the story of the prodigal son who, in Nick Cassen's master-class of physical comic acting, mimed his own debauched journey in a series of compromising positions, to the wonderful drawl of Sophie Larn's Texan king, these were a group of actors clearly enjoying their work. The sense of ensemble was probably the most impressive thing of all with a babble of activity erupting each time a new story was played out.
The dancers and singers also impressed with their effortless professionalism. The quality of the ensemble work stood out throughout the piece with many audience members forgetting that this was in fact a school production, likening it rather to a West End show.
The show exposed the talent of over forty individuals who brought their unique skills to this performance. From follow-spot operators and sound engineers, band members and stage crew to actors and accomplished singers, this was an ensemble whose enjoyment of their work propelled the show to greater heights than they, or their audience, had probably imagined. |

The World in a Shoe
On 29th November Chigwell School had the pleasure to welcome Mr Phil Williams, who delivered the lecture “The world in a Shoe”. This is what Artur Brus (LVI) said about the lecture: “ Mr Phil Williams’ talk drew from years of experience in the tropics, looking at the ‘think globally act locally’ campaign. He was an inspiration to all Sixth Formers, suggesting the most effective ways of recycling and reducing consumption to lessen our footprint on the earth. His talk looked at issues concerning not only the tropics but also the UK. We heard that by 2050 there will be almost no natural tropical forest left on the surface of our planet. This and other eye opening facts emotionally affected all those who attended the lecture and hopefully Mr Williams’ words will not go to waste and help us to be more empathic, to understand the needs of the poorest countries, and above all, how to respect the environment”.

BECKETT SHORTS
Chigwell School Director of Drama, Mr Tim Coker, gives a brief review of the latest LV Drama students’ performance: Beckett Shorts:
“Beckett is not easy. Audiences over the last two night's performances of 3 of his short plays - Rough for Theatre II, Play and That Time - left the Drama Centre in contemplative mood: amused and confused in equal measure.
Our UV GCSE students can feel duly proud to have tackled so professionally, this notoriously difficult material and to have created theatrical worlds so wonderfully strange and dislocated. That they did so with such joie de vivre, revelling in the absurdities of Beckett's characters and exalting the humdrum nature of their futile existence, was genuinely impressive. There are not many schools which would tackle Beckett at GCSE level.
As an assessed performance, the evening was a huge success, all candidates scored highly and some will achieve top marks for their interpretations.” |

Art Success
At the end of the A-level moderation last summer, Chigwell's Art Department was invited to nominate up to four pupils whose work was considered to be suitable for submission for a national exhibition of A-level and VCE work. We recently received the good news that two of our pupils have been successful, and that their work will be exhibited at the Millennium Point in Birmingham in November. The successful pupils were Micha Dudley M6L and Charles Cooper M6P. Both pieces of work involved some digital production - Micha's is a photograph of her sister Rebecca, done in the style of Guy Bourdin, and Charles' work is produced using a modelling program called 'Poser.' |

GCSE results 2005
The School was delighted with yet another record breaking sets of GCSE results, the best ever achieved, with a 99% pass rate at A* ABC grades. Pleasingly, 25% of this year’s candidates achieved A* grades while 61% scored A*A grades.
There were some exceptional individual results: Eric Edison achieved 10 A*s, Felicia Bamgbose and Andy Banerjee 9 A*s each, Matthew Neal and Edward Underhill 8 A*s each.
We are very proud of our pupils who worked consistently hard and also managed to get involved in a full programme of sporting, music, drama and charity events during their examinations year, proving that academic success and a holistic rounded education go hand in hand at Chigwell. |

A
level results 2005
We are absolutely delighted by the outstanding results of our A level
students. For the second year running there was a 100% pass rate.
72% of all papers taken were at the top AB grades. 17 students achieved
three A grades or better, with exceptional performances from Zhaohan
Wang (six A grades), Qinbo Ding and Mengye Shi (five), Hugh Lund,
John Savage and Can Kulah (four). The Headmaster said: “All
this year’s students have worked hard over a long period of
time and these results are thoroughly deserved. They reflect, too,
some first-class teaching in a positive and supportive academic environment.” |

Scouts’ Summer Camp
2005
On the Friday after term ended the Scouts set off for the Isle of
Wight for the Summer Camp 2005. The campsite was at Corf, on the shore
of a creek along the North-West side of the island, near Yarmouth.
Everyone had a day on the beach, including an afternoon surfing, kayaking,
body-boarding etc., as well as a visit to Carisbrooke Castle. Other
activities included a visit to the Needles theme park, kayaking in
the creek by the site, night games, code-breaking, hiking to the highest
point of the island, and the traditional Camp Sports. But the main
event for all was the EXPEDITION. The Scouts hiked in Patrols along
the beautiful paths and cliffs, camped overnight, and continued the
next day to their rendezvous: these went remarkably well, and no one
got (very) lost.

Speech
Day
The School Year has come to an end with a flurry of enjoyable activities
and events such as Speech Day when former Member of Parliament, Mr
Tim Collins, OC, presented the prizes and gave a memorable address.
Mr Collins spoke with warmth and humour about the need for young people
today to be prepared for the unexpected and to cultivate hope for
the future. He came across to all as a likeable politician who thinks
clearly about matters he cares about whilst retaining his humanity. |

Animal Farm
The Junior School play, Animal Farm, directed by Mr Tim Coker and
performed in the Drama Centre on June 16 and 17, was a production
without compromise and a challenge to which the actors rose with great
maturity. From the atmospheric opening sequence to the rousing, ironic
final song, this was an impressive piece of large ensemble work. Naturally,
some actors are more equal than others and a handful of performances
deserve individual mention. Abigail Cassen's optimistic old boar,
Major, created a colourful and vigorous start to the show. Later on
she moved into comic mode as an endearingly slow-witted Boxer. The
cart-horse, Emma Hollis, also turned in a great comic performance
as the self-aggrandising poet, Minimus. Of all 12 actors sharing the
"main" pig characters, Richard Collier's consistently bullish
Napoleon stole the show. Special thanks should also go to Myles Webb
and Matthew Gibbs, who "teched" this tricky show with great
professionalism; to Miss Amanda Lapwood for helping to coach the singing
and for expertly accompanying the performances at the piano and to
Mr Chris Mills for his mask production line. |

MACBETH
2005:
On the 9th and 10th of June the Lower Corridor staged a new
adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, directed by Mr Chris Jones. The
children coped admirably well with an extremely hard text, producing
two very successful performances and establishing a clear understanding
of this renaissance classic. All the pupils had a great deal of lines
to learn, and put in a huge amount of their own time to rehearse.
The show opened with a captivating dance sequence, performed by the
three witches: Ashley Ward, Serena Raja and Holly Leibovitch, who
maintained an extremely mature level of focus throughout the performance,
independently creating very convincing and unsettling characters.
Cole Crossman played a dark and troubled Macbeth, displaying a theatrical
awareness beyond his years; he was well supported by a powerful and
disturbing Elena Coveney as lady Macbeth. Sachin Valera created a
Banquo all of his own, and really allowed the audience to share his
characters' troubles. Luke Williams was a believable, passionate Lennox
, and Colan Chin played a dangerous Macduff, whose stage combat ability
will live long in the minds of the audience. Daniel Alexandrou was
a convincing Ross, and Sophie Ogunyemi an excellent Lady Macduff;
William Sibley belied his years as her son, and his two wonderfully
evil, bitter murderers were played by Anna Horn and Georgia Harrison.
The whole cast produced two memorable evenings, which they will remember
for a long time to come. |

Myles Webb and Matthew Gibbs should also be congratulated for their
helpful and creative approach to the technical side of things. |

Young Designer of the Year
At the beginning of May, Sixth Former and Scholar, Anne Houlton,
entered the ‘Audi Design Foundation’s annual Young Designer
of the Year Competition, which is an initiative that seeks to discover
exceptional innovation and design talent in schools throughout the
United Kingdom. For Anne’s A2 Major Project, she designed and
made a highly intricate and innovate Easel for Artists. Her brief
was to produce a working prototype of an easel that is suited to all
terrains which can easily be folded away and transported. The quality
and precision of her completed design and practical work is exceptional.
She came up against students from all the well established centres
of excellence for Design and Technology across the South of England.
Throughout the day, her work attracted much attention and praise from
the judges and all who attended the event. |
