The U-16 Football team were beaten in the semi-finals of the Independent Schools FA national cup after losing 3-1 at Chilton Cantelo school from Somerset. Both teams started brightly and it was clear from the beginning that it would be an exciting and close game of football. Chigwell defended well in the first half and broke the deadlock after great interplay around the penalty box which allowed Taylor Gershon to be released and fire home. Both teams created good chances but Chilton levelled shortly before half time through a penalty after a handball incident. Chilton then struck the killer blow on the stroke of half time after a cross was converted. Chigwell responded brightly in the second half and put pressure on with the Chilton Cantelo goalkeeper making an excellent save from Conor Caplan. There was always going to be another goal in the match and unfortunately it came midway through the second half from Chilton Cantelo. Chigwell rallied until the end and after many goalmouth scrambles they couldn’t find a goal which would have led to a tense finish. Chilton Cantelo were excellent hosts on a lovely spring day and the standard of football on display by both teams was excellent. The Chigwell team finished the match knowing that they couldn’t have worked any harder and drew many positives from the defeat. This is the second year the Chigwell under-16 team have reached the semi-finals after losing to again to Chilton Cantelo school at home in 2011.
