At Chigwell we aim to offer an integrated and balanced science programme running from the start of the Junior School (Year 3) up to GCSE and A level.
Throughout the whole School the sciences are practically orientated with an emphasis on developing the skills and processes required. Investigation work thus forms an integral part of the course at all levels.
At Key Stage 2 science the QCA schemes of work have been developed and we are keen to allow the children the chance to wonder and enjoy science. They are encouraged to question, make predictions and identify fair-testing methods.

In Years 7 and 8 a newly devised course follows broadly the content of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum programme of study and is based around the Longman 11-14 series of text books. Pupils use separate text books for each of the three Sciences. This leads to a rigorous approach which leads directly into the study of Biology Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects from Year 9 onwards The pupils engage in a comprehensive programme of practical work and have the opportunity to develop their interest in science beyond the curriculum.
At Key Stage 4, science is a core syllabus subject. In Years 9 to 11 all pupils study biology, chemistry and physics leading to either the AQA two science GCSE qualifications (Core + Additional Science) or the three separate AQA GCSE sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Each of the science disciplines is taught by a specialist teacher on an allocation of three teaching periods per week over the three years leading up to the GCSE examinations, which are taken during years 10 and 11. Success at GCSE in either the two or three science qualifications would then enable any student to biology, chemistry and/or physics at AS/A2 level.
