Geography

Geography is the study of the way people interact with the natural world. At the present time with so many man made problems affecting the world the importance of geography can not be doubted. At Key Stage 3 the pupils study a variety of topical issues such as plate tectonics and population issues.

At GCSE level Geography is a very popular choice and the Edexcel syllabus is followed. The students study a mixture of physical, environmental and human issues. They also take part in coastal fieldwork at Walton.

In the VI Form the new Edexcel A level specification is followed. There are two modules in Year 12 and two in Year 13. In Year 12 the students will study one module called Global Challenges. This is spit into two parts.

The first part is called World at Risk which looks at the causes and impacts of various types hazards which affect the world. The other part of the module is called Going Global and this looks at globalisation and the impact of this on population, industry and urbanisation.

The second module is called Geographical Investigations and this looks at four topics; extreme weather, crowded coasts, unequal spaces and re-branding places. The students must choose two topics to study. There is no coursework requirement in the new A level specification but field work is still an integral part of the course and will be assessed in the examinations.

At A2 level the students study two modules, Contested Planet and Geographical Research.

Contested Planet looks at six topics on a variety of topical environmental issues such as water conflicts and superpower geographies, whereas Geographical Research allows the students to study one topic in depth and for them to write a research essay on their chosen topic such as pollution of cold environments, etc. Both modules allow for independent learning skills and issues based work

At Chigwell we are firm believers in allowing the students to explore geography in the way which is most appropriate for their needs. We utilise ICT and many other techniques to bring geography to life to the students to show them that it is a living subject, which is all around them and is of vital importance to understanding the world better.
