Economics

Economics is defined as a study of human behaviour that attempts to explain how scarce resources are used to produce an output to help satisfy the unlimited wants of any society. The wider issues for the subject include an analysis of the economic performance of the UK (employment, growth, inflation and international trade) and the development of both rich and poor nations. The OCR course that students follow at Chigwell enables Sixth Form economists to study two compulsory modules at AS – Markets in Action and The National and International Economy. At A2 we apply, the principles learnt in the AS course to the modules the Global Economy and Transport Economics.

The GCE A- Level in economics is a very popular subject at Chigwell. This year there are three groups in both the Lower and Middle VI. We assume no prior knowledge and whilst students who study mathematics tend to do well at economics there is very little mathematics in the A – Level syllabus. This subject is a social science and is a good complement for science or art subjects. The examinations at the end of the second year require detailed written responses in continuous prose whilst most questions at AS expect shorter responses.

It is helpful if students considering studying economics at AS have an interest in current affairs. This will enable their written responses to demonstrate the required level of detail for a high grade in the examinations. The subject is recognised as a relevant and worthwhile A – Level that is valued by universities and employers alike.
