Drama

At Chigwell, we place a firm emphasis on contemporary drama. We attempt to develop a foundation of 21st century theatrical thinking, challenging an audience wherever possible and encouraging a clear sense of dramatic discernment. At the heart of the drama curriculum throughout the school is an emphasis on devising new and original work. A Level Drama and Theatre Studies combines practical experience of theatre with written analysis of text, genre and performance. This course offers the opportunity for those genuinely interested in the world of drama to develop their knowledge and understanding of modern theatre practice through practical experience and written analysis, whilst at the same time working towards a mainstream qualification accepted by all universities including Oxbridge. Students should have an interest in acting although design and technical skills can be offered. GCSE drama follows a similar pattern of practical work and written criticism.

Students perform extracts from a wide range of plays and will regularly take trips to see live professional theatre. Drama is also taught throughout the lower school. Practical skills are developed alongside analytical and self-evaluation exercises. Students are exposed to a wide range of theatrical styles and genres throughout history and from a variety of cultures through improvisatory and text-based projects.

Regular informal performances of student work occur throughout the year and each year group will have access to at least one professional live performance. Written work supports practical experience and there is a short written examination at the end of each year from Year 8.
