All Chigwellians study classics in Year 7 and 8. In Year 7 we run an innovative course in "Classical Foundations", which covers Greek and Roman mythology, Roman history and language awareness. Towards the end of the year we start a study of the Latin language, using the Cambridge Latin Course, set in Pompeii, which combines a solid start to Latin with a strong introduction to life in Roman times. We complete Book I of the CLC by the end of Year 8; those who choose to continue Latin into Year 9 study Book II, where we take the story to Roman Britain and Egypt; Latin GCSE involves further language study, reading original Latin literature, and some Roman civilisation. Classical Greek is taught to all as a taster, and is available for GCSE with come extra-curricular commitment.
In the VI Form, Latin, Greek and Classical Civilisation are offered to AS and A2 level. Latin and Greek involve more advanced study of language and the development of the ability to translate more complicated Latin, as well as more extensive study of Roman literature of different kinds. In Classical Civilisation students read, in English, Homer, Virgil and Greek Drama (Tragedy and Comedy).
