Chemistry

Pupils study chemistry topics in year 7 and 8 as part of the integrated and balanced science programme. In year 9 they embark on the GCSE course of study where chemistry is delivered as a separate subject. The AQA Specification is followed for core and additional science and separate chemistry qualifications.

Chemistry is a practical subject and pupils regularly carry out experiments to both support and enhance their learning experience. Pupils are encouraged to think deeply and extend their knowledge whenever possible. Topics covered in year 9 are: The Reactivity Series, Properties and Extraction of Metals, Limestone and The Earth and Atmosphere. Pupils widen their knowledge base in year 10 by studying topics which include: Atomic Structure, Bonding, Structure and Alloys, Electrolysis, Crude oil and Plant oils and Equations and reacting quantities. In addition those pupils working towards the separate award study the Periodic Table and Aqueous Chemistry. The topics covered in year 11 are: Rates of Reaction, Acids, Bases and Salts and Equilibria and Industrial processes. In addition those pupils working towards the separate award study: Acids, moles in solutions and titrations, Thermochemistry and Identification and analysis of substances. Checklists of all year 9-11 learning outcomes are available to pupils via the Chigwell school pupil sharepoint.

During the GCSE course of study pupils also cover a centre-assessed unit which represents 25% of the total assessment for core science, additional science and separate chemistry qualifications. Pupils complete an Investigative Skills Assignment, which is normal class practical work followed by an externally set, internally assessed test taking 45 minutes. A separate practical skills mark is also awarded.

Away from the classroom, pupils in years 9 to 11 have the opportunity to compete in the Royal Society Top of the Bench competition each year. Selected year 11 pupils are nominated to attend a Salters Chemistry Camp.

AS and A2 chemistry is a popular choice at Chigwell where the OCR specification is followed. Pupils study topics in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry at both AS and A2. The A2 course is more demanding, especially in its mathematical requirements.

Once again practical work forms a central and important complementary aspect of the course. It gives an opportunity to discover aspects of chemistry in addition to gaining experience in the safe handling of chemicals and apparatus. The assessment of experimental skills takes place as part of both the AS and A2 courses.

There are many opportunities for pupils to develop a real interest in the subject beyond the specification requirements and we strongly promote independent thinking and learning. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the chemistry Olympiad, attend lectures and workshops, to subscribe to relevant magazines and to consider membership to the Royal Society of Chemistry Chem Net.

The department are currently in the process of selecting a new A level specification to start teaching in September 2008 as part of the latest national A level curriculum review.
