THE RISHAM SARAO SIXTH FORM CENTRE APPEAL

We are seeking to raise £1.5m to build a state-of-the-art Sixth Form Centre. In keeping with the School aims, we plan to build a specialist centre to prepare our Sixth Form students for life beyond school.

The Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre will:

• Provide a dedicated space for our Sixth Form students to study
• Be a centre for university and careers resources, where students will be able to receive advice and support from specialist staff
• Expand our provision for independent study, collaborative learning and research
• Provide a valuable Sixth Form social space

The Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre project will be the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the history of Chigwell School and the first to specifically benefit Sixth Formers. We are encouraged by the generosity of the many friends, parents and Old Chigwellians who enabled us to build the Drama Centre in 2003 and the Thelma Sullivan All-Weather Pitch in 2008. Although the target of £1,500,000 will be immensely challenging for the School to raise through its own endeavours, we have no doubt that, with the enthusiastic help of our supporters, it is achievable.

This exciting project has already had a great start thanks to a most generous pledge from the family of Risham Sarao. Risham, who was an outstanding Chigwell student, died at the age of 21 in a tragic road accident in Peru. She was, in the words of her Aunt, Mrs Sukjit Sohi, ‘a true product of Chigwell’.

Risham’s family wish to create a permanent memorial so that her name will live on through a facility that will help future generations of Chigwell students. They have pledged £100,000 towards the building of the Sixth Form Centre. Please unite with them in this venture and donate as much as you can.

Adjacent to the Sports Hall, the Sixth Form Centre will enjoy superb views of the School grounds and Epping Forest beyond them.

The School Development Programme

In recent years, the rapid growth of the School has been matched by an extensive building and refurbishment programme, mostly funded by the School’s own resources. In addition to the Drama Centre and the All-Weather Pitch, this has included the acquisition of Radley’s Yard in 2006 as a teaching and study centre; the refurbishment of New Hall in 2006 with the generous help of the Friends of Chigwell; the construction of the Wilson Building officially opened in 2009; and a much extended and improved Junior School Library completed in August 2009. Work has also begun to extensively improve our catering facilities. Future plans include the improvement and re-structuring of boarding facilities for Sixth Form boys and the opening of a Pre Prep School. However, we need your help to ensure that future generations of Chigwellians can continue to receive the highest standards of education in the best possible environment through the development of a Sixth Form Centre. Please support the Risham Sarao Sixth Form Centre Appeal as generously as you can.

Annual Giving

In addition to our Priority Campaign for the Sixth Form Centre, the School is launching an Annual Fund, to provide the opportunity to parents, Old Chigwellians and friends to raise funds to support the School in many different ways. The Chigwell Annual Fund will support:

Our students – providing means-tested bursaries to ensure that deserving pupils, regardless of financial background, can benefit from a Chigwell education.

The continual development of the School – providing resources to maintain, preserve and develop the School’s buildings, academic, cultural and sports facilities.

The Annual Fund will seek support every year, from existing and new donors. Donations can be earmarked to benefit a specific project or aspects of life here at Chigwell. If your gift is directed to this category, it will be used where the School considers it can be put to the best use and provide maximum benefit to the Chigwell Community.

For details of where to direct gifts for the Annual Fund, please contact Loredana Morrison at the Development Office, telephone: 020 8501 5748, email: lmorrison@chigwell-school.org

Ways of giving

Single Gifts: every gift makes a difference
If you wish to make single donation you can do so by cheque, electronic fund transfer, credit or debit card or Charity Aid Foundation vouchers. All gifts are most welcome. Single gifts remain the most popular way for many Chigwellians to contribute to the future of the School. You can choose to donate by any of these methods by filling in the relevant section in the enclosed donation form.

Regular Giving by Standing Order
A regular gift provides a secure footing to plan ahead for the future and allows the donor to make payments when most suitable: monthly, quarterly or annually. If you wish to make a regular gift by Standing Order, please fill in the relevant section in the enclosed donation form and return it to the School Development Office, and not to your Bank.

Increase the value of your donations with Gift Aid
Making a gift of any size using the Gift Aid scheme enables Chigwell School, as a registered charity, to reclaim from the Government the basic rate of tax on your gift (currently 20%), which you will already have paid. This means an extra 25p for every £1 donated, at no extra cost to you, with a top-up from HM Revenue and Customs of an additional 3p for every £1 donated until 2011. As an example, gift aid would increase a £3000 donation to £3840.

If you are a basic rate taxpayer, it stops there. But if you pay tax at, for example, the higher rate of 40%, you can claim tax relief, equivalent to 20% of your gross gift, when you record your donation on your annual Self-Assessment Tax Return. Please consider a Gift Aid donation wherever possible. If you are unsure whether your donation qualifies for Gift Aid, we will be pleased to advise you. Please contact the Development Office at the address below.

Corporate giving
Companies make donations under Gift Aid by simply making a payment to Chigwell School. The company then deducts that amount in calculating its profits for corporation tax purposes for the accounting period in which the donation was made. In this way, the company receives the full tax reclaim (i.e. a gift of £10,000 to Chigwell School would cost the company £6,000 rather than £7,800) and should therefore adjust the size of its initial gift accordingly. In addition, companies making gifts of stock or real property can claim a deduction on profits for corporation tax as well as avoid tax on chargeable gains.
