Key Stage 3

At Chigwell we aim to offer a broad approach to Design & Technology at Key Stage 3. The syllabus has been developed to offer a wide variety of different activites and design situations. The pupils work with a range of materials and processes to produce products which meet specific objectives.

Pupils develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of design & technology with a blend of design, practical and theoretical activities. We aim to provide a varied and stimulating 3 year course that enables pupils to gain a solid foundation before GCSE entry. Below we have presented a number of our recently completed KS3 projects with worked examples.

Year 7

Computer Mouse Project

Brief - The design and manufacture a protoype model of a computer mouse. The designs were expected to be ergonomic, aesthetically pleasing, easy to operate and durable. Pupils were expected to think about aspects such as the overall shape, position of buttons, colour scheme etc. In addition to this they had to make a mouse mat using computer generated imagery that will appeal to young computer users.

Year 7

Mini Light Project

Situation - Security of our personal possessions is an important part of modern life and, as a result we carry keys for all sorts of purposes. When you return home at night, it can often be difficult to find a key hole when it is dark.

Brief - Pupils were asked to design and make a Mini Light which can be easily attached to a standard set of keys. You must also develop a visually interesting package for your product. The packaging design must be able to hold the Mini Light on a 'supporting card'. The supporting card should be informative, display the company name / logo and launch a new corporate identity.

Year 7/8 Clocks with a Theme

Situation – Imagine that you are working for a design consultancy, the managing director has asked the design team to come up with some innovative ideas for a new clock. However, each one of the designers have been given their own ‘theme’. Therefore you must pick a theme ‘out of a hat’ to work towards. You will only be able to change your theme if you find somebody else to swap with but you must consult the managing director first!

Brief – You must design and manufacture an innovative clock that meets your allocated ‘theme specification’.

Year 9 Packaging and Sales Display Project

Situation – Designers need to have an understanding of how products are presented to the commercial market. When considering the market for any product you need to be aware of how it will be presented to the customer. The amount and type of packaging needed for different products varies greatly. Packaging fulfils five main functions; to contain, protect, preserve, sell and inform. The importance of each of these attributes will depend on the type of product.

Brief – You must design and make the packaging for a product of your choice. You may use an existing package, for example a drinks bottle or CD case, then using a computer, design your own graphics. You will then be expected to design and make a ‘Sale Display’ that is able to attract the customer and fit in a shop window for the launch of your new product.
